“Maize!”

I chased after Blue, catching her with a hand on her shoulder. “Let him go.” If he didn’t want to hear what SAM had to say that was his choice. And it would be a lie to say I wasn’t a little glad to see him walk away. I could understand some fraction of what he was trying to do and why but being near him still made me uneasy.

Though SAM’s reveal made me a hundred times more uneasy, and I stared after Maize too, for a moment. Was he the heir? And if so, what was going to happen now that he’d outright rejected the idea?

SAM wouldn’t stand for something like that. And as much as I wanted to say that was Maize’s problem to deal with, something between the two of them to sort out, I knew it was more complicated than that, and not something we could ignore. It was half of why we’d come here in the first place, after all.

“Is it Maize?” Lightning asked suddenly, catching my attention again. I turned back to the others, and Blue shuffled along with me, but I could tell her thoughts were miles away.

SAM sighed. “Your memories are fragile still. Even if you’ve had no surges of power since the lock was undone, they aren’t yet stable. The reaction to this may throw all of you into the same condition as Maize.”

“So what the hell do you expect us to do about all this?” Fox demanded. “Sit around and wait for you to call us to fulfill our destiny? I call bullshit.”

“Fox—”

“No, I’m serious. I don’t want some riddle or anything. What do you expect us to do now? Because I’m pretty close to walking out and finding something to do with my life other than jumping through hoops for you.”

There was only tense silence as we all watched SAM, waiting. We all had the same question. If this was the end of it, time for the balance to break and everything to change, but she wouldn’t tell us how that was going to happen, what was there for us to do? I didn’t want to sit around waiting on things to blow up, and I knew they didn’t either.

Finally, SAM stepped forward, unruffled by Fox’s tone. “I never wanted to tell you this, but it seems we don’t have many options. As I said, the balance must break. The six of you are caught together, and until that changes my heir won’t rise to their full potential and be able to take over. If I die before that happens there could be wider chaos than any of us can anticipate.”

I felt suddenly cold all over, a different kind of cold than the winter chill, and I looked to Fox. “That’s what you were warning us about before,” I said. Fox glanced back to me, dark eyes wide and understanding. When we’d gone together to the Otherworld in search of SAM she’d warned us that one path we might take could lead to disaster.
